English

We believe that literacy and communication are key life skills and that through our curriculum children will be supported to develop the skills and knowledge that will enable them to communicate effectively and creatively with the world at large, through both spoken and written language.  We provide a rich and stimulating language environment, integrating speaking and listening, drama and role play and reading, and writing enabling the children to read and write with confidence, fluency and understanding. We aim for our children to foster an enthusiasm for and love of reading for life.

A variety of teaching and learning styles are used in our English lessons in order to meet the needs of all our pupils. The English Curriculum is delivered using the National Curriculum at KS1.  In Reception, Communication and language, and literacy development are incorporated in all areas of learning. Progression maps across each area of the English curriculum outline the content taught, as well as the way this builds, progressively, year on year.

We believe that speaking and listening should be at the heart of education and developed through every activity that we do at school. Staff have created very effective language learning environments promoting the speech, language and communication needs of all children.

Children are taught word building skills through daily, systematic, synthetic phonics sessions. All year groups now teach phonics, reading and writing using the ‘Read Write inc’ program. This is taught in small groups, closely matched to children’s next steps.

If you have any questions regarding the curriculum please contact Mrs Kirby at the school.
